Empower Children with the Power of Books Grant

Do you remember how good it felt as a child to have an abundance of books to choose from in your classroom? How about books to browse through for the summer? Well, our empowerment grant has been created in honor of one of our founding NRVRC members, Rochelle. Her years of commitment to the love of reading has inspired us to put books into the hands of children through you, the teacher, so you may help carry on this excitement for reading in your students.

Who is eligible?: New River Valley Reading Council Members

Amount:  $250.00

Use of funds:  The money granted can be used in order to supplement initiatives such as building a classroom library, initiating a reading program, supplementing a book room, or developing a take-home library for students.

Vision:  Rochelle’s vision is that we get books into the hands of the students so they will feel confident in their reading while taking ownership in the reading process. Be creative and find ways to bring the joy of literacy to life!

Requirements:  Applicants will create a plan and timeline for how this money will be used. It is expected that the winner will briefly share the highlights from the grant experience at our annual fall conference in September 2016.

Please include the following information into a document with a minimum of two pages and a maximum of five pages. Feel free to create a document that will work best to suit your needs (e.g., narrative, Powerpoint, text and tables):

  1. Tell us about yourself professionally and why this grant is important to you
  2. Objective of the grant
  3. Budget (use of funds)
  4. Specific activities and reasons for those activities
  5. General explanation of how the time and resources requested will achieve the objective
  6. A conclusion report will be required to be submitted to NRVRC before August 1, 2016 to explain how

the grant money was used, whether your objective was met, and other reflective thoughts. You will also be asked to present at our annual fall conference in September 2016.

    Email document ( I-V) to nrvrc13@gmail.com by September 12, 2015.

Grant will be awarded September 19, 2015 with a presentation of intentions on September 26, 2015.
